AG1 is a nutrient-dense, easy to use greens powder designed to fill certain nutritional gaps in your daily diet. I tested and researched whether it’s worth the hype and the money.
If you follow any health and fitness Instagram accounts or listen to health focused podcasts, you probably have seen or heard an ad for AG1 (previously known as Athletic Greens). It’s a greens powder that combines vitamins, minerals, and nutrients designed to promote gut health, support immunity, boost energy, and help you recover faster from workouts and physical activity.
Most people say that sounds great! But, how does it taste, and is it worth the price tag?
For six months my co-worker kept telling me I would like AG1 (Athletic Greens). I watched her shake it up in water and drink it many times. I looked at the ingredient list 20 times before I eventually decided it was time for me to try it. Now, two years later, I’m giving you my full AG1 review.
What does AG1 (Athletic Greens) taste like, what are its benefits and why do I love it?
Let’s dive in and I’ll give you my full review.

My Experience With AG1 (Athletic Greens)
Everything about AG1 is up my alley. I am a believer in good nutrition, prebiotics, probiotics, and overall wellness. But truth be told, I am typically not a fan of “greens powders” because of the way they taste.
Most greens drinks taste earthy to me. I didn’t think I’d be able to choke it down.
My co-worker Sam kept telling me it tasted sweet, but from the looks of it, it was another gritty, green drink. So, what made me flip the switch?
Well, frankly, I just kept hearing about it from health experts and people I respect and I decided to try it. And shockingly, I loved it right away. I love the way it tastes and the way I feel, and after one week, I was hooked.
Now, after a full two years of taking Athletic Greens every day, I can say it’s become an easy habit to follow and I look forward to it every morning. If I’m on the go, the travel packets are so convenient that I never miss a day all year.
While I always feel better when I know I’m feeding my body good nutrients, I was already a very healthy eater before starting AG1 and had good energy levels, so I did not experience a crazy burst of energy.
For me the convenience and health benefits of hydration along with all my vitamins, minerals, superfoods, digestive enzymes is the reason I’m hooked.
I’m not consistent with pill taking. But I am 100% consistent with AG1.
However, since starting AG1, I have turned many people onto it as well who have reported back to me that they notice improved energy levels, their gut feels better with less bloating, and they are glad to be getting in the nutrients that they would basically never eat.
In my opinion AG1 is helping me and a whole lot of people achieve better overall health.
How It Works
AG1 recommends mixing 1 scoop of the powder into an 8-ounce glass of cold water daily. I personally do a little extra water (up to 12-ounces). Plus, I also add in a scoop of my collagen to simplify my supplement process.
I use the provided shaker bottle. It is better shaken than stirred.
The company recommends taking it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach for optimal quick absorption and that is what I do.
However, many people add it to their smoothies or use it as an afternoon pick-me-up.
I personally mix it with cold water. However, others will use juice or milk, and that works too. Once you open the pouch, the company recommends you keep it refrigerated and use it within 90 days.
According to the website, customers can expect to notice benefits within a few days or up to a few weeks after starting AG1, depending on their current nutritional needs.
Let’s face it, according to the CDC, only 1 in 10 Americans eat their daily recommended fruits and veggies. Most people who take AG1 are going to experience some health benefits right away just because of that statistic alone!
What Does AG1 Taste Like?
AG1 (Athletic Greens) has a pineapple vanilla flavor. There are hints of papaya and a subtle sweetness from the stevia— without artificial flavoring, sweeteners, and additives.
That can be hard to believe when it looks like a dark green drink. But, I was pleasantly surprised.
There is no grassy taste or grainy feel. But you should keep shaking it a few times while drinking it. If you leave it sit, some sediment can settle.
Now that you know what it tastes like, let’s explore some of the awesome benefits of drinking AG1!
The Benefits of Athletic Greens
There are so many great benefits that come with drinking AG1. From the nutrition to the hydration, the list goes on and on.
Here are a few of my favorite AG1 benefits that have made an impact in my life:
AG1 Replaced My Vitamin Pills
I don’t like choking down vitamin pills. I’m a healthy eater but I also think it’s a good insurance policy to take a few vitamins. Realizing that one drink in the morning would replace all of those pills and powders was a quick yes for me.
I still take Vitamin D and Omega 3 which is not in Athletic Greens. And, I also take collagen as I mentioned earlier, but most of my nutritional vitamin intake is covered first thing in the morning!
AG1 Promotes Gut Health
The prebiotics, probiotics (lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium), and plant-based enzymes in the product help with digestion, improve your gut microbiome and nutrient absorption.
Supports Your Immune System
AG1 supports your immune health with a daily dose of vitamin C, zinc, and mushroom complex.
Boosts Energy
AG1 boosts energy since it is filled with B vitamins that support energy throughout the day.
Helps with Recovery
AG1 helps with recovery since it’s packed with superfoods, adaptogens and antioxidants.
Ease Of Use
One scoop easily dissolves in water; you just shake it up and drink it down. You can mix it with juice or milk. I personally use cold water.
You get a shaker bottle with your first subscription order.
NSF Certified for Sport
This third-party certification ensures what is on the label is what’s in the bottle.
According to Athletic Greens, “We place quality first and ensure that our ingredients are individually selected to meet top-quality sourcing standards that are third-party tested and tested for NSF Certified for Sport. The formula is then reviewed and refined regularly by our board of scientific advisors.”

Who Should Not Use AG1?
It all depends on if you are happy with your current nutrition and split of macronutrients: fats, carbs and proteins.
If you are getting a good mix of macronutrients, you most likely are getting a good mix of micronutrients (meaning your vitamins and minerals). If this is the case, you may not need a supplement.
When pregnant or breastfeeding, I always recommend consulting your trusted healthcare provider first.
If you are taking blood thinners, you should definitely check with your doctor. There could be side affects.
When it comes to prescription medications, I always think it’s smart to consult with your healthcare provider before you start mixing things together. I recommend this for any new supplement, not just AG1.
Where Can I Buy Athletic Greens?
AG1 is not sold at retail, so you’ll need to order online. It’s an easy process, and based on the pricing, it’s more cost effective to sign up for the subscription option.
I recommend you add up what you are spending on a multi-vitamin as well as other superfoods, dietary supplements and probiotics and compare the daily price. For me personally, taking AG1 is saving me money from what I used to spend on multivitamins.
For the subscription, along with your AG1 pouch, you’ll get a canister, shaker bottle, five travel packets, and one year supply of Vitamin D3+K2 liquid drops when you subscribe. Plus, you’ll save $20!
And don’t be freaked out by the subscription.
You can skip a shipment, move the date, change the delivery address, or cancel altogether. You can even interchange between the pouch and the travel packets.
It’s super easy, there is a money-back guarantee and in my opinion, totally worth it!
The Pouch
- One-Time Purchase (30 Servings): $99 ($3.30 per serving)
- Single Monthly Subscription (30 Servings): $79 ($2.63 per serving)
- Double Monthly Subscription (60 Servings): $149 ($2.48 per serving)
The Travel Packs
- One-Time Purchase (30 Servings): $109 ($3.63 per serving)

The Final Verdict on AG1
AG1 offers a convenient way to help fill nutrient gaps in your diet. And, there are plenty of amazing reviews online and on their website from satisfied customers.
I will always say “food first, supplement second”. But because our worlds are so busy, I know it is hard to get in all your nutrients on a daily basis.
You should never consider this a replacement for eating fruits and vegetables. Instead, I like to use it as more of an insurance policy to ensure the intake of all vitamins and minerals and plants compounds daily.
I am a believer in what this product has done for me and is doing for others.

Athletic Greens Review FAQS
Yes, Athletic Greens can replace your multivitamin. You still need to take Vitamin D and Omega 3 separately. They are not in AG1.
It’s best to take Athletic Greens first thing in the morning on an empty stomach for best absorption. Water is easiest but if you would prefer, you can also mix with a milk, juice or blend it in a smoothie.
Refrigerating your Athletic Greens helps to maintain the integrity and efficacy of the ingredients. When left unrefrigerated, they may start to break down and the helpful effects may be lessened. However, don’t stress if you leave on your counter for a few hours by accident. You just don’t want to leave it out permanently.
Athletic Greens currently ships to the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe. Shipping cost varies based on location.
To cancel your subscription, just contact Athletic Greens by email, phone or use the Live Chat on the website.
If you don’t love the product with your first purchase, you can contact Athletic Greens within 90 days of your first order to receive a full refund.

Did you have any menopause symptoms before starting this and if so how did it address those?
Chris Freytag, CPT on January 25, 2024 at 8:52 AM
SO YES - I did have menopause symptoms-but I was post menopause when I started AG1. I started about 2-3 years ago on AG1 and I had already went through menopause at age 51. Post-menopause-I personally started noticing the slowing down and gut stuff. With AG1 - I have better energy and better gut health. Plus I love that I'm consistent. I am not consistent with pills and having a complete drink that I enjoy - I drink it 365 days a year. I have heard from lots of my followers that using AG1 has helped with overall night sweats and hot flashes!

Does it contain vitamin K? I am on blood thinners. Also, any fish oils? Thanks
Chris Freytag, CPT on May 2, 2023 at 11:12 AM
To the best of my knowledge there is no Vit K. They actually send you a VIt D + K supplement to go with the AG1 when you sign up for a subscription. My husband was on a blood thinner and had no problems. BUT - the customer service on AG1 website is stellar and they will get back to you.

Nice article about Athletic Greens. please can you help me with Athletic Greens interactions with other medications. more post on it will be appreciated.
Chris Freytag, CPT on May 2, 2023 at 11:14 AM
Hi there - I am not a doctor and there are SOOOO many medications out there in the marketplace _ I can not tell you that. They have a full time staff that would respond to you about your meds if you ask their customer service. My husband is on several different meds and never even thought about it being a problem with superfoods and vitamins but you can never be too safe so ask your doctor or AG1 Customer Service about your particular meds.

Chris, in your opinion how does this compare to Organifi? I assume you like AG1 better?
Chris Freytag, CPT on February 14, 2023 at 2:20 PM
Hi Kathy - Great question! So I am still an Organifi lover, but I prefer their Organifi GOLD tea as my night time routine. I take the Athletic Greens (AG1) every single morning first thing on an empty stomach. I will say I do prefer the taste of the AG1 drink and it has so many more nutrients and vitamins (75+) in the AG1 drink. The Athletic Greens has replaced my morning extra vitamin/ pill routine so I am no longer taking extra pills. I do still drink the GOLD tea at night for completely different reasons. It's more of my night time, sleepy tea if that makes more sense. Still great nutrition in the GOLD tea but not as many vitamins and nutrients in the GOLD Tea.

Is this ok if your diabetic?
Chris Freytag, CPT on February 14, 2023 at 2:07 PM
Hi Deb - Great question! I would think yes, but I would definitely bring this up to your doctor first and have them review it for you!
